Why Semiconductor Plants and Data Centers Need Advanced Plastic Tanks

Semiconductor plants, chip fabs, battery plants, AI data centers, and high-purity industrial facilities all depend on reliable liquid handling. These facilities often need chemical storage tanks, ultrapure water support tanks, cooling water treatment tanks, wastewater treatment tanks, neutralization tanks, acid tanks, caustic tanks, secondary containment, and corrosion-resistant piping systems.

That is why material selection matters.

A tank is not just a container. A tank protects the process.

At Bailiff Enterprises, we manufacture and fabricate industrial plastic tanks using specific, engineer-recognizable resin systems, including Dow RESILITY™ DPDB-3220 NT 7 High Density Polyethylene Resin, PSD Rotoworx RMPP141 Natural polypropylene, and Arkema KYNAR FLEX® 2850 WR Powder PVDF/Kynar.

These materials are valuable because they can resist corrosion, reduce metal contamination risk, and be matched to the chemical, temperature, purity needs, and installation environment.

Why PVDF/Kynar Is Important in Semiconductor Manufacturing

PVDF, commonly known by the trade name Kynar, is one of the most important plastics used in high-purity and harsh chemical environments.

PVDF is commonly reviewed when a project needs:

  • High chemical resistance
  • High-purity liquid handling
  • Low contamination risk
  • Resistance to many acids and oxidizers
  • Better temperature capability than many standard plastics
  • Weldable thermoplastic fabrication
  • Corrosion resistance compared with metal
  • Atmospheric chemical storage tanks
  • PVDF pipe, fittings, valves, and custom components

Arkema promotes Kynar PVDF for semiconductor manufacturing because of its high purity, chemical resistance, use in high-purity piping systems, wet benches, tanks, pumps, valves, and compatibility with hot acids and DI water.

Arkema Kynar PVDF for Semiconductor Manufacturing

Bailiff Enterprises uses Arkema KYNAR FLEX® 2850 WR Powder for specialty PVDF/Kynar tank applications. For aggressive chemicals, PVDF should be reviewed when HDPE or polypropylene may not be enough.

HDPE Tanks Using Dow RESILITY™ DPDB-3220 NT 7

HDPE is the workhorse material for many large industrial tanks.

Bailiff Enterprises uses Dow RESILITY™ DPDB-3220 NT 7 High Density Polyethylene Resin for HDPE tank applications.

Dow lists this resin for rotational molding and injection molding. Dow also lists chemical tanks, potable water tanks, large agricultural tanks, intermediate bulk containers, and industrial products as uses for this resin.

Dow RESILITY™ DPDB-3220 NT 7 High Density Polyethylene Resin

HDPE is often reviewed first because it is durable, economical, corrosion-resistant, and well suited for many bulk liquid applications.

HDPE tanks may be reviewed for:

  • Bulk water storage
  • Industrial water storage
  • Cooling tower treatment chemicals
  • Wastewater treatment chemicals
  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Caustic soda
  • Ferric chloride
  • Aluminum sulfate
  • Sodium bisulfite
  • Sodium metabisulfite
  • Calcium chloride
  • Brine
  • DEF
  • Liquid fertilizer
  • Concrete admixtures
  • Polymers and flocculants
  • pH adjustment chemicals
  • Secondary containment
  • Data center water treatment tanks
  • Semiconductor utility water tanks

HDPE is not the best fit for every chemical.

Strong oxidizers, certain solvents, high temperatures, and some aggressive chemical combinations may require polypropylene, PVDF/Kynar, or another engineered material.

Polypropylene Tanks Using PSD Rotoworx RMPP141 Natural

Polypropylene is a strong material for chemical storage and fabricated tanks where HDPE may not be the best choice.

Bailiff Enterprises uses PSD Rotoworx RMPP141 Natural polypropylene for polypropylene tank applications.

PSD Rotoworx describes its rotational molding polypropylene compounds as having advantages over polyethylene in stiffness, hardness, chemical resistance, creep deformation, and heat resistance, while maintaining comparable ambient impact performance.

PSD Rotoworx Polypropylene Compounds for Rotational Molding

PSD also discusses RMPP141 tank performance and states that vacuum testing demonstrates the performance of RMPP141 and its superiority over polyethylene for tanks.

PSD Rotoworx RMPP141 Properties and Tank Testing

Polypropylene tanks may be reviewed when a customer needs:

  • Better heat resistance than HDPE
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Stiffer tank construction
  • Fabricated chemical tanks
  • Process tanks
  • Neutralization tanks
  • Wastewater treatment tanks
  • Caustic storage tanks
  • Higher-temperature chemical storage

Polypropylene may be considered for chemicals and applications such as:

  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Caustic soda
  • Potassium hydroxide
  • Caustic potash
  • Ammonium hydroxide
  • Detergent chemicals
  • Cleaning chemicals
  • Chemical blending tanks
  • Plating tanks
  • Neutralization tanks
  • Wastewater process tanks
  • Rinse tanks

PVDF/Kynar is commonly reviewed when a project needs:

  • High chemical resistance
  • High-purity liquid handling
  • Low contamination risk
  • Resistance to many acids and oxidizers
  • Better temperature capability than many standard plastics
  • Weldable thermoplastic fabrication
  • Corrosion resistance compared with metal
  • Atmospheric chemical storage tanks
  • PVDF pipe, fittings, valves, and custom components

PVDF/Kynar may be reviewed for semiconductor and high-purity chemical applications involving:

  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Hydrofluoric acid
  • Sulfuric acid
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Nitric acid
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Peracetic acid
  • Sodium hypochlorite
  • Ozone exposure
  • Chlorine exposure
  • Bromine exposure
  • Hydrobromic acid
  • Chromic acid
  • Acid mixtures
  • High-purity water
  • Hot ultrapure water
  • Chemical waste streams
  • Etching and cleaning support chemicals

Every PVDF application still needs engineering review. Chemical concentration, temperature, venting, UV exposure, fittings, and operating conditions all matter.

Real-World Case Study #1: PVDF Replacing 316 Stainless Steel in Semiconductor Wafer Cleaning

GF Piping Systems published a semiconductor case study involving ASE Co. Ltd., a Korean semiconductor wafer equipment manufacturer.

ASE previously used 316 stainless steel piping in a box cleaning system for semiconductor wafer cleaning. The system handled hydrochloric acid, cold ultrapure water, and hot ultrapure water.

The stainless steel system created issues with:

  • Corrosion
  • Particle leach-out
  • Inner surface finish
  • High-purity performance

ASE replaced the 316 stainless steel system with GF’s SYGEF Plus PVDF-HP piping system.

The result was a corrosion-free PVDF-HP piping system for semiconductor wafer cleaning.

GF Piping Systems ASE PVDF-HP Semiconductor Wafer Cleaning Case Study

This is a strong example of why PVDF can be better than stainless steel in certain semiconductor liquid handling applications.

Stainless steel is strong. But in high-purity chemical environments, corrosion and metal contamination can become major problems.

PVDF helps solve that problem when the chemistry and temperature are correct.

Real-World Case Study #2: PVDF for Semiconductor Ultrapure Water Systems

Ultrapure water is one of the most important liquids in semiconductor manufacturing.

Wafer rinsing and wafer cleaning depend heavily on water quality.

A public Ultra Pure Water article explains that early semiconductor wafer cleaning systems used steel piping, but metal-related extractables could affect chip performance. The industry moved toward high-purity plastic piping because contamination control became critical.

Ultra Pure Water Article on PVDF and High-Purity Water Piping

This supports a major point for semiconductor buyers:

PVDF is not just a corrosion-resistant plastic. PVDF is part of the high-purity liquid handling world.

That matters for tanks, piping, fittings, wet benches, and chemical handling systems.

Real-World Case Study #3: PVDF Replacing 316 Stainless Steel in a Corrosive Outdoor Liquid System

Arkema and Simtech published a case study involving TOTE’s fructose transportation pipeline in Puerto Rico.

A 316 stainless steel pipeline was only two years old but had severe corrosion from saltwater conditions. The system experienced pinhole leaks and corrosion problems.

The project team selected Kynar PVDF piping because it was compatible with the product, does not corrode over time, and is UV resistant. The final system used approximately 2,200 feet of butt-fused Kynar PVDF piping.

Arkema / Simtech PVDF Pipeline for Fructose Transportation Case Study

This is not a semiconductor case.

But it is very useful proof.

It shows that PVDF can replace 316 stainless steel when corrosion, UV exposure, sanitation, and long-term service life matter.

That same logic can apply to atmospheric liquid storage tanks where pressure is not required and chemical compatibility supports PVDF.

Real-World Case Study #4: PVDF Instead of Metal in a Phosphoric Acid Plant

Chemical Engineering published a case study where metal bubble caps in distillation column trays were replaced with PVDF components in a phosphoric acid plant.

The plant had corrosion problems with metal components. The article explains that SS-304 and SS-316 stainless steel components can corrode in the presence of certain chemicals, including amines, chlorides, and ketones. The project used Kynar PVDF to address corrosion in food-grade phosphoric acid processing.

PVDF Bubble Caps for Distillation Columns

This matters for tank buyers because phosphoric acid, acids, chlorides, and corrosive liquid environments are common reasons engineers review PVDF instead of stainless steel.

PVDF is not always the cheapest option. But when corrosion causes downtime, PVDF can become the smarter long-term investment.

Real-World Case Study #5: Red Kynar PVDF for Sodium Hypochlorite Feed Systems

Plant Engineering published an article about using Red Kynar PVDF in sodium hypochlorite feed systems for cooling tower treatment.

Sodium hypochlorite is commonly used to control microbiological activity in cooling towers, but chlorine-based systems are corrosive to many common fluid handling materials.

The article describes a 12.5% sodium hypochlorite feed system using Red Kynar PVDF piping components. It reported that the installation had trouble-free service for six years and was still in service in 2022.

Plant Engineering Red Kynar PVDF Sodium Hypochlorite Feed System

This is important for data centers, semiconductor plants, refineries, and chemical plants.

Cooling systems often need biocide feed, sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, bromine chemistry, corrosion inhibitors, pH control chemicals, and water treatment chemicals.

PVDF may be a strong material to review when the liquid is too aggressive for standard plastics or when metal corrosion is a concern.

Where Data Centers Use HDPE, Polypropylene, and PVDF

Data centers are not chip fabs, but they also depend on reliable liquid handling.

AI data centers and high-density computing facilities are pushing cooling systems harder than ever. Liquid cooling, process cooling water, chemical treatment, glycol systems, chilled water systems, corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and backup water storage are becoming more important.

GF Piping Systems notes that plastic piping solutions made from materials including HDPE, polypropylene, and PVDF are used in data center cooling applications.

GF Piping Systems Data Center Solutions

Bailiff’s tank materials may support data center applications such as:

  • Cooling tower chemical tanks
  • Sodium hypochlorite tanks
  • Biocide tanks
  • Chlorine dioxide support tanks
  • Bromine chemistry support tanks
  • Corrosion inhibitor tanks
  • pH adjustment tanks
  • Glycol storage tanks
  • Backup water storage tanks
  • Process cooling water tanks
  • Wastewater neutralization tanks
  • Secondary containment tanks
  • Special waste chemical tanks
  • Polypropylene special waste tanks
  • PVDF tanks for aggressive water treatment chemicals

As data centers grow, the need for reliable chemical and water storage will grow with them.

Why PVDF Can Be Superior to Stainless Steel for Certain Atmospheric Liquid Applications

Stainless steel is a strong and valuable material.

But stainless steel is not automatically the best choice for every chemical storage application.

For atmospheric tanks and non-pressure liquid storage, PVDF may be superior when the main problem is corrosion, contamination, oxidizer exposure, chemical compatibility, or long-term maintenance.

PVDF can be better than stainless steel in certain applications because:

  1. PVDF does not rust like metal.
  2. PVDF does not rely on a passive oxide layer.
  3. PVDF can reduce metal contamination risk in high-purity systems.
  4. PVDF resists many acids, oxidizers, halogens, and chemical mixtures.
  5. PVDF can be welded and fabricated into tanks, fittings, and custom components.
  6. PVDF can reduce maintenance in corrosive applications.
  7. PVDF can be lighter and easier to handle than stainless steel.
  8. PVDF can be a better long-term investment when stainless steel would require exotic alloy upgrades.

This is especially important for atmospheric chemical storage tanks.

If the liquid does not require pressure containment, PVDF can be reviewed as a serious alternative to stainless steel for certain chemicals.

Final Engineering Note

No tank material should be selected by keyword alone.

PVDF, polypropylene, and HDPE each have strengths.

The correct material depends on:

  • Chemical name
  • Chemical concentration
  • Temperature
  • Specific gravity
  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • UV exposure
  • Venting
  • Fitting type
  • Welded or mechanical connections
  • Secondary containment requirements
  • Atmospheric or pressure service
  • Expected tank life

Bailiff Enterprises manufactures atmospheric storage tanks.

Our tanks are not designed for pressure service unless specifically engineered and approved for that application.

Conclusion

Semiconductor plants, AI data centers, high-purity water systems, and chemical processing facilities all need reliable liquid handling.
