50% Caustic Soda Storage Tanks: Engineering & RFQ Guide
Caustic soda storage tanks hold sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for water treatment, pH adjustment, chemical processing and industrial cleaning. Bailiff Enterprises, Inc. manufactures HDPE, polypropylene and PVDF sodium hydroxide tanks in Willis, Texas, and ships nationwide. For 50% caustic, Bailiff molds HDPE tanks to a 2.2 SG design basis. The biggest field problem with 50% caustic is crystallization: it starts to solidify at about 54°F (12°C).
Best tank material for sodium hydroxide
From Bailiff’s chemical compatibility chart:
| Material | Sodium hydroxide 50% (chart rating) | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| HDPE | Good | Ambient-temperature 50% caustic. Lowest cost. Bailiff molds these tanks to a 2.2 SG design basis. |
| Polypropylene | Excellent | Warmer caustic service. |
| PVDF | Excellent | Mixed or severe service. Confirm strong-base service with the resin maker’s data. |
Chemical resistance vs. tank design
These are two separate questions. The chart rating describes how the material holds up to the chemical. The SG rating describes the tank’s mechanical design: how heavy a liquid the wall is built to hold. For 50% caustic soda, Bailiff molds HDPE tanks to a 2.2 SG rating, a heavier wall than our 1.9 SG standard. Fifty percent caustic weighs about 1.5 SG, so the 2.2 SG wall gives a large margin over the liquid’s weight. That HDPE tank is Bailiff’s go-to for ambient 50% caustic. For warmer caustic, polypropylene is the step up; its temperature limit for your service is confirmed on the quote.
Freezing: the number one caustic problem
Fifty percent caustic soda begins to crystallize at roughly 54°F to 60°F, depending on exact strength. Diluted caustic freezes much lower; 25% to 32% solutions stay liquid well below freezing. Caustic makers such as OxyChem and Olin publish freezing-point curves in their handbooks.
- Indoor storage is the simplest fix.
- Outdoor tanks may need heat tracing, insulation or a heated enclosure, usually supplied by the installer or site contractor. Tell us your freeze-protection plan so the fittings suit it.
- Some buyers switch to 25% caustic to avoid freezing. Lower-concentration caustic needs more storage volume for the same amount of NaOH, so compare chemical and freight costs.
- Never thaw a frozen tank with an open flame or a heat source pressed against the plastic.
Weight and specific gravity
Fifty percent caustic soda weighs about 1.5 specific gravity, roughly 12.7 pounds per gallon, depending on concentration and temperature. That is half again as heavy as water. Bailiff molds 50% caustic tanks to 2.2 SG, well above the liquid’s weight. Every tank is water-tested before it ships, and upright HDPE tanks are manufactured to ASTM D1998 where it applies.
Sizes
Bailiff HDPE tanks run from 550 to 10,000 gallons. Polypropylene runs from 10 to 10,000 gallons and PVDF from 10 to 5,000 gallons. Larger HDPE vertical tanks include 4,000 gallons (102 in. x 127 in.), 6,000 gallons (102 in. x 186 in.) and 8,000 gallons (120 in. x 182 in.). Confirm dimensions on the approval drawing.
Fittings, venting and dilution
- Avoid aluminum, zinc, galvanized steel and brass in wetted parts. Caustic attacks them.
- Flanges are ANSI 150. Tanks are atmospheric and must vent freely.
- Caustic soda absorbs carbon dioxide from air and can crust at vents and fill lines. Plan for inspection.
- Diluting caustic gives off a lot of heat. Do not dilute inside a storage tank unless the system is designed for it. Always add caustic to water, never water to caustic.
Caustic containment
Bailiff offers double-wall tanks and containment basins. Keep caustic separate from acids. Containment capacity depends on site-specific requirements, so confirm it with your authority having jurisdiction. The Chlorine Institute publishes Pamphlet 94 on caustic storage equipment.

Frequently asked questions
Can HDPE store 50% caustic soda?
Yes. Bailiff’s chart rates HDPE Good for 50% sodium hydroxide, and HDPE is a common choice for ambient storage. For 50% caustic, Bailiff molds HDPE tanks to a heavier 2.2 SG rating. Use polypropylene for warmer service.
At what temperature does 50% caustic freeze?
About 54°F (12°C), and somewhat higher at strengths just above 50%. Plan freeze protection for outdoor tanks.
What SG rating should a 50% caustic tank have?
Bailiff molds 50% caustic tanks to 2.2 SG. The liquid is about 1.5 SG, so the heavier wall adds margin. SG covers weight only; chemical and temperature suitability are separate checks.
Can caustic and bleach share containment?
Ask your chemical supplier and your authority having jurisdiction. Never let caustic or bleach share containment with acids.
