How to Specify a Data Center Cooling Skid Glycol Tank

To specify a glycol tank for a data-center cooling skid, define its function, fluid formulation, working volume, actual tank temperature and connection schedule before selecting a material. Confirm available tank geometry, containment requirements and service access. Standard Bailiff storage tanks are atmospheric, not pressure vessels.

1. Identify the function

Distinguish bulk storage, premixed coolant makeup, concentrate storage and drain-down collection. An atmospheric storage tank is not a pressure-rated expansion vessel or a CDU component.

2. Specify the complete coolant formulation

Provide the product name, SDS, propylene glycol (PG) or ethylene glycol (EG) type, concentration, inhibitors, biocides and any cleaning chemicals. PG and EG have different toxicity and handling considerations. Technology cooling loop guidance may specify inhibited PG concentrations, but use the actual project’s coolant requirements. Neat-glycol compatibility does not prove compatibility with an inhibited mixture.

3. Identify storage conditions

Record normal, minimum and maximum fluid temperatures at the tank, including maximum fill temperature. The circulating loop temperature may be different from ambient storage temperature. Confirm fluid density, indoor/outdoor location, UV exposure, low-temperature impact, anchorage, floor loading and access.

4. Select material and tank geometry

Compare HDPE, polypropylene and PVDF against the actual conditions. Material availability varies by tank size, design and manufacturing method; request the current offerings from Bailiff. See polypropylene tanks, PVDF tanks and tank products.

5. Specify nozzles, vents and containment

Document connection size, type, orientation and elevation for fill, suction, drain, overflow, vent and instrumentation. Atmospheric venting must accommodate fluid transfer; a suitable filtered breather may help limit debris ingress. Confirm secondary containment requirements with the AHJ. Natural-color HDPE may be translucent; confirm availability of opaque or black HDPE options where light exposure is a concern.

6. Prepare the technical RFQ

  • Tank function, required volume and general arrangement
  • Coolant product, SDS, PG/EG concentration and additive package
  • Actual minimum, normal and maximum tank temperatures
  • Resin preference and applicable design requirements
  • Connection and instrument schedule
  • Containment, venting and installation requirements
  • Quantity, destination and requested schedule

Frequently asked questions

Can PP or PVDF replace HDPE?

Yes, when the new material and completed tank are suitable. Changing materials may change fitting types, welding or molding methods, available geometry, lead time and cost; confirm each item in the quotation.

Are approval drawings available?

Bailiff uses approval drawings during order review; confirm the drawing deliverables for the project.

Can a storage tank connect to a pressurized cooling system?

Only through appropriately engineered pressure isolation and transfer equipment. The standard storage tank itself is atmospheric.
