Double-Wall Glycol Collection Tanks and Containment

A double-wall glycol collection tank provides a primary storage vessel surrounded by a secondary barrier for compatible recovered coolant. Data-center maintenance teams may use collection tanks during drain-down, flushing or equipment replacement. Containment capacity and material suitability must be checked for the actual recovered fluid and project requirements.

Collection versus makeup storage

Recovered coolant may contain aged inhibitors, biocides, corrosion products or cleaning chemicals that were not present in the original mixture. Confirm compatibility with the recovered mixture rather than relying only on neat propylene glycol or ethylene glycol charts. Reuse requires appropriate testing and facility approval; disposal requirements depend on fluid type and jurisdiction.

Double-wall tanks and separate containment basins

Double-wall construction provides an additional barrier around the primary vessel. A single-wall tank within a properly designed containment basin is another option. Neither configuration automatically satisfies every applicable requirement. Some codes use a percentage of the largest container when defining containment capacity; the actual rule must be confirmed with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Engineering inputs for collection tanks

  • Maximum credible drain-down volume and fill rate
  • Coolant chemistry, concentration, additives and cleaning-fluid exposure
  • Normal and maximum collection temperature
  • Venting and overfill protection
  • Containment capacity and installation footprint
  • Fittings, gaskets, access and structural support
  • Outdoor UV and cold-weather conditions, if applicable

Bailiff manufacturing options

Bailiff Enterprises manufactures single-wall and double-wall industrial plastic tanks. Available size-and-material combinations must be confirmed for each quotation; not every resin is offered in every tank size. No interstitial monitoring connection, sensor or alarm equipment is represented as standard in this article.

Frequently asked questions

Does every glycol tank need double-wall containment?

No. Requirements depend on the facility, fluid and applicable rules.

Can recovered coolant be reused?

Only if its condition meets the coolant supplier’s and facility’s reuse criteria.

Can a collection tank receive hot coolant?

Only when the completed tank is suitable for the maximum collection temperature and full fluid chemistry.
