HDPE vs. Polypropylene vs. PVDF for Glycol Tanks
HDPE, polypropylene and PVDF can each be considered for glycol storage in data-center cooling infrastructure, but the correct choice depends on the actual coolant and finished tank design. Material selection should begin with the formulation, storage temperature, fitting materials and installation conditions. PVDF is not required for ordinary glycol storage.
What does the tank actually store?
Atmospheric makeup and reserve tanks may store glycol near ambient temperature, outside a warmer circulating cooling loop. Confirm the maximum temperature at the tank, including filling and maintenance, rather than assuming it equals the hottest loop temperature.

Materials used in Bailiff manufacturing
Bailiff Enterprises uses Dow RESILITY DPDB-3220 NT 7 HDPE, PSD Rotoworx RMPP141 Natural polypropylene and Arkema KYNAR FLEX 2850 WR for PVDF tank manufacturing. These resin identities are not performance ratings for a completed tank. See polypropylene tanks and PVDF tanks.
Why formulated glycol requires separate review
Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol differ in handling and physical properties. Inhibitors, biocides and cleaning chemicals may change compatibility compared with neat glycol. Obtain the coolant supplier’s formulation, SDS, concentration and recommendations. A filtered atmospheric breather may reduce debris ingress if correctly sized for filling and emptying. Natural-color HDPE may be translucent; confirm current opaque or black HDPE availability with Bailiff where light control matters.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 1.9 SG tank rating confirm glycol suitability?
No. Many glycol-water mixtures have specific gravities approximately 1.02–1.07, depending on formulation and temperature, so 1.9 SG offers a nominal density margin. Density rating does not establish chemical or temperature suitability.
Is PVDF required for glycol?
No. It is a project-specific material choice.
Can an atmospheric tank be used as a pressure vessel?
No. Standard Bailiff storage tanks are atmospheric.
