Data Center Glycol Storage Tanks: HDPE and Polypropylene Options

As data centers add liquid cooling, operators need reliable ways to store and handle water-glycol coolant used in closed-loop systems. Bailiff Enterprises manufactures industrial polyethylene and polypropylene tanks that may be suitable for glycol storage and system makeup applications when the exact fluid, tank configuration, and operating conditions are confirmed.

Where glycol storage tanks fit in data-center cooling

Water-glycol mixtures can support freeze protection and heat transfer in secondary cooling circuits. A storage tank can hold bulk coolant, premixed fluid, or makeup solution for controlled transfer into a system. It is a storage and handling vessel; it does not replace the pumps, heat exchangers, piping, coolant distribution units, or pressure-rated components in the circulating loop.

HDPE and polypropylene tank options

Bailiff’s HDPE tanks and polypropylene tanks are potential options for compatible glycol-water fluids. Material selection depends on whether the coolant uses ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, its concentration, corrosion inhibitors and other additives, storage temperature, and the wetted fittings, gaskets, and valves. Compatibility guidance for neat glycol should not be treated as approval for every formulated data-center coolant.

Specify the tank for the actual coolant

Before selecting a tank, provide the coolant manufacturer and product name, SDS, glycol type and concentration, full additive package, minimum and maximum storage temperatures, required capacity, site location, and connection details. The tank must also be selected for the liquid’s specific gravity and the intended installation. A nominal 1.9 SG rating, for example, is a tank design rating and does not by itself confirm chemical or temperature suitability.

ASHRAE notes that inhibited glycol concentrates can behave differently from diluted mixtures and that container effects should be considered when choosing storage. Confirm compatibility with the coolant supplier and Bailiff for the complete assembly—including resin, fittings, gaskets, and service conditions—before purchase or filling.

Questions to ask before specifying a data-center glycol tank

  • Is the coolant ethylene-glycol-based or propylene-glycol-based?
  • Is it a premix or concentrate, and what is the exact inhibitor formulation?
  • Will the tank store fluid at ambient temperature or above the normal ambient range?
  • What capacity, specific-gravity rating, fittings, containment, and installation are required?
  • Is the tank for storage and makeup, rather than a pressurized circulation loop?
